Full-Size Dynamic Model of Giant Excavator

Caterpillar Project Pushes Metrology Envelope
The research engineering team at Caterpillar came up with a set of requirements for the system that would capture a D9 bulldozer's track-in-motion data as well as other relevant 3D coordinate data derived from the bulldozer's surface and movement. This technology played a crucial role in measuring simultaneous forces exerted on the bulldozer track shoe, and, at the same time, measuring simultaneous displacement (position and angle) of the track shoe to the ground.
Virtual prototyping has long been the holy grail for enterprises looking to streamline their product development cycle. Using physical prototypes to test new concepts and improvements can cost manufacturers millions of dollars for downstream testing and prototype production. A virtual prototype is essentially an exact 3D digital replica of a physical object. This precise CAD model can be used as the basis for motion simulation, analysis, design, interference checking, animation and many other engineering tasks.
