Airbus in Stade, Germany
Stade project team of Airbus uses new measuring system with a wide spectrum of potential applications.
Since 1995 the Stade project team working under the direction of department TSM2 has focused its attention on identifying those areas of the rudder unit where the traditional inspection gauge concept can be replaced by more economical measurement techniques. After examining several measurement methods, it was finally decided to opt for a 3D laser tracker from Leica with which the fabrication of at least three more gauges could be saved. Now that the new technique has been in use successfully for a year for the first shrink rudders, it is planned to use the measuring system for Wide Body (WB) rudder of the A300 and A310 series as well as for Long Range (LR) rudders of the A330 and A340 series. The new system offers some persuasive advantages: saving of time, more accurate collection of measured data, immediate comparison of actual measured data with reference values and greater measuring accuracy, plus more compact and easier to operate. The existing gauge could be eliminated and the gained space is now used as a further production area. The goal of the Laser Tracker application is at one hand the faster and simplified data capture and on the other hand the direct comparison of the measured data with the design data. The restriction to certain profiles, a disadvantage of the old mechanical gauge, has been eliminated with the Laser Tracker as any point of the object surface may be measured without additional effort.
